Tip for Timed Quizzes with Accommodations

  • When setting up a timed quiz, it’s helpful to anticipate that some students may have an official accommodation letter for extended time (from Accessibility Services).

  • To avoid multiple retakes and reduce further test anxiety, set the quiz availability window to be longer, by several hours (3-4 hours), than the timed quiz duration.

  • For example, if a timed quiz is set to 1 hour and a student has an accommodation 2X time, when the quiz availability window is set for 1.5 hours, the student won’t get their full 2 hours.

  • Instead, set the quiz availability window to several hours (ie. 3-4 hours), making the quiz availability window two to three times more that the timed quiz.

  • This allows students without accommodations to finish in 1 hour, while those with accommodations can be set up to receive the extra time they require.

Bonus: This approach reduces the need for retakes, and can make grading smoother.
