Canvas: Migrate a Canvas Classic Quiz to New Quizzes?

Faculty can migrate a single quiz from Classic Quizzes to New Quizzes directly from the Quizzes Index Page within a Canvas course. This method is useful when you want to selectively update specific quizzes to take advantage of New Quizzes features without migrating the entire course content.

The New Quizzes migration feature can also be done during course import or copy, question banks linked via question groups in Classic Quizzes will automatically migrate to New Quizzes. Faculty do not need to manually add questions from those banks before migrating.

How to tell if the quiz is a New Quiz, Classic Quiz and if it is published or not.

Solid green New Quiz rocket indicates it is published, solid black New Quiz rocket indicates it is unpublished, outlined green Classic Quiz rocket indicates it is published, outlined black Classic Quiz rocket indicates it is unpublished.

How to Migrate a Quiz from Classic to New Quizzes in Canvas

  1. Open Your Course

    • In the Canvas Global Navigation menu, click Courses.
    • Select the course that contains the quiz you want to migrate.

  2. Access the Quizzes Page

    • In the course navigation menu, click Quizzes.

  3. Initiate Migration

    • Locate the quiz you want to migrate.

    • Click the Options icon (three vertical dots) next to the quiz.

    • Select Migrate from the drop down menu.

  4. Open the Migrated Quiz

    • After migration, the quiz will display a (filled in) New Quiz icon next to its name.
    • Click the quiz name to open and review the migrated version.

Notes:

  • New Quizzes does not include a survey feature. Therefore, surveys migrated from Classic Quizzes come over as standard quizzes in New Quizzes.
  • Migrated quizzes are unpublished by default.
