Exporting a Canvas course allows you to create a backup copy of the course.
- The exported file can be imported into a future Canvas course.
- We recommend storing files on OneDrive instead of on your computer.
- Exports do not include backups of student interactions and grades.
How to Export a Canvas Course
- Click Settings from the Course Navigation menu
- Select Export Course Content from the sidebar
- Click the Create Export button
- When your content is ready, click on the export link, i.e., "New Export" to download

Note: You may need to refresh your web browser. If you leave the webpage and return later, you may see Course Export link from 3 minutes ago or similar.
Exports are packaged as IMSCC files, which can only be opened (imported) by programs that support Common Cartridge files (Canvas). Depending on the course size, it may take a few minutes, or you can wait to receive an email when the export is complete.
