Kaltura Personal Capture: Recording with a Laptop using an External Microphone

This article is intended to show students how to use their laptops to record with Kaltura Personal Capture (webcam only, no screen, and how to select an audio source for an external microphone). Then, after the recording is saved to Kaltura, how to add their project partners and instructor as collaborators to the video.

 

  1. If this is your first time using Kaltura Personal Capture, you will need to download and install the program.
    1. Goto My Media in the Canvas course
    2. Select Add New button near the top right.
    3. Select Kaltura Personal Capture
    4. Download the appropriate version of the software (Windows/Mac).
      (follow the instructions on the screen to download and install the software).
       
  2. Open Kaltura Personal Capture and prepare settings for recording.
    1. Connect the external USB microphone before proceeding.
    2. Both Camera and Microphone icons should be toggled on (i.e., the icon should not be crossed out).
    3. The Screen icon should be toggled off (ie., the icon should be crossed out).
    4. Under the Microphone, click the arrow next to Audio to choose the external microphone.
       
  3. Click the red button to record
     
  4. Click the "Stop" button to stop recording.
     
  5. The Entry window comes up, give the video a name, description, and tags, then click Save & Upload to place the video into the library.
  6.  Add a collaborator to the recording click on My Media in Canvas and choose the video.
    1. To the right of the video, click the pencil icon.
    2. Under the view preview, click Collaboration.
    3. Under Media Collaborators, click + Add Collaborator.
    4. Begin typing the user's name in the field that says “Type user or group name."
    5. Then choose the role.
    6. Click Add.
