Flip is a free interactive video discussion platform from Microsoft that embeds directly into Canvas. Students can share their voices asynchronously in short video, text, and audio messages.

Overview Video

Functionality
  • Flip is a cloud-based platform and will work well with any device.
  • Instructors create topics which are then shared with students for their consumption and/or response.
  • Students do not need Flip accounts to participate.
  • Students can re-record their responses as many times as they like before submitting.
  • Instructors control the length and parameters of the discussions.
  • Students can like, star, or respond to peer posts.
  • Instructors can add grading feedback and rubrics in the tool.
Teaching Strategies
  • Class discussions. Create a Flip discussion prompt just like a text-based discussion board.
  • Student presentations. You can set a maximum length for your students' videos, from 15 seconds to 10 minutes.
  • Jigsaw activities. Post one Flip topic and have students each report on a specific facet.
  • Informal assessment. Check in on your students' comprehension. Moderate their posts so that they can only see their peers' responses after they post their own. Students can listen to each other's reflections to sharpen their own understanding.
  • Student reflection
  • Asynchronous office hours. Students can reach out when they have questions while you respond with a video when it's convenient for you.
  • Guest speakers
  • Peer feedback
  • Social annotation
