Canvas: Add People to a Course

Important Note

Student and teacher enrollment for academic classes occurs automatically. Faculty do not need to add students to their courses.

Information about selecting the appropriate user role for academic courses and non-academic courses is below.

Directions

  1. Go to the People section

     
  2. Click +People

     
  3.  Select either Email address or Login ID (Fox ID)

     
  4. Type in the person's email address or Fox ID, depending on the selection above
    Separate multiple entries with a comma. 

     5. Select the appropriate roles and section of the people being added.

     6. Click Next.  

     7. Check to make sure the correct person is listed. 

     8. Click Add Users 



 

 

Academic Courses: User Roles

Role in Canvas Permissions in Canvas  
Librarian
  • Add, Edit, View course content, including files, modules, assignments, quizzes, and discussions
  • Post an announcement
  • Email the entire class or individual class members
  • View list of people enrolled in the course
 
TA
  • Add, Edit, View course content, including files, modules, assignments, quizzes, and discussions
  • Post an announcement
  • Email the entire class or individual class members
  • View list of people enrolled in the course
 
Designer
  • Add, Edit, View course content, including files, modules, assignments, quizzes, and discussions
  • Post an announcement
  • Email the entire class or individual class members
  • View list of people enrolled in the course
 
Observer
  • View all course content but cannot participate or submit anything
 

Non-Academic Courses: User Roles

Teacher
  • Add, Edit, View course content, including files, modules, assignments, quizzes, and discussions
  • View & edit student grades
  • Post an announcement
  • Email the entire class or individual class members
  • View list of people enrolled in the course
 
Student
  • View all published course content
  • Participate in course activities (assignments, discussions)
  • Email the entire class or individual class members
  • View list of people enrolled in the course (if People link is visible)
 
Librarian
  • Add, Edit, View course content, including files, modules, assignments, quizzes, and discussions
  • Post an announcement
  • Email the entire class or individual class members
  • View list of people enrolled in the course
 
TA
  • Add, Edit, View course content, including files, modules, assignments, quizzes, and discussions
  • Post an announcement
  • Email the entire class or individual class members
  • View list of people enrolled in the course
 
Designer
  • Add, Edit, View course content, including files, modules, assignments, quizzes, and discussions
  • Post an announcement
  • Email the entire class or individual class members

Observer
  • View all course content but cannot participate or submit anything
