Search for Information in Teams

The search bar allows users to look for people, messages, and files within Microsoft Teams. Start any search from the search bar at the top of Teams. When you type a word or name, Teams will show related results. You can choose one of the suggested items or press Enter (Return) to get a full list.

Search for people

1. At the top of Teams, use the Search bar to find someone.

2. Click in the Search bar, and type in a name:

3. Click on the name, to start or resume a chat with someone.

4. To see more search results apart from the Top Hits, press Enter (Return) on your keyboard.

5. Select a person from the results, or select the People tab.

On the People tab, you can view additional contact information. 

7. To a chat with that person, select their name.

 

Search for messages

1. Start typing a keyword into the search box and press Enter (Return). This displays a list of results that include the keyword.

2. Filter your results. After you’ve entered your search terms into the search box, use the Messages tab to refine your search.

3. Choose a message result, or narrow your search by selecting the From or Date drop-menu.

 

Search for files

Use the Search bar to find a file.

1. Type in file keywords and press Enter (Return) to see the results. 

2. After you’ve entered your search terms into the search box, click on the Files tab to refine your search.

 

3. To open the file, move your cursor to the file name until you see Open file, then click Open file.

 

 

Additional commands

Commands are shortcuts that allow us to do some common tasks in Teams without having to go through the complete process: update your status, go to a specific channel, show your recent files and saved messages, and more.

1. To use a command, type / in the search box at the top of Teams. You'll see a menu of all the commands that are supported. 

2. Select the command you want, press Enter (Return) and Teams takes care of the rest.

Some of the most common commands, include:

/unread  shows all of your unread activity, like unread messages.

/help  get help with Teams.

/goto  allows you to go directly to a team or channel chat
